Columbus Voyage Tied to Syphilis Spread? (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 28 (HealthDay News) -- A new examination of the origin of syphilis supports the theory that the sexually transmitted disease was carried to Europe aboard Christopher Columbus' ships as they sailed home from the New World.

The disease was not spread through sexual contact at the time, but adapted to survive once it got to Europe, Emory University researchers say.

"Syphilis has been around for 500 years," study co-leader Molly Zuckerman, a former Emory graduate student who is now an assistant professor at Mississippi State University, said in an Emory news release. "People started debating where it came from shortly afterwards, and they haven't stopped since. It was one of the first global diseases, and understanding where it came from and how it spread may help us combat diseases today."

After analyzing skeletal evidence in 54 published reports, the researchers found that syphilis did not exist in Europe until after Columbus' historic voyage to the New World in 1492. They said that most of the skeletal material lacked characteristics that would meet standard diagnostic criteria for chronic syphilis, such as small holes on the skull and long bones.

It appears that skeletons previously considered evidence of syphilis in Europe before Columbus' trip were dated incorrectly because of seafood consumption, which would have altered the collagen levels of the skeletons, the researchers said.

Their appraisal is published in the Yearbook of Physical Anthropology.

"This is the first time that all 54 of these cases have been evaluated systematically," said study co-author George Armelagos, an anthropologist at Emory, in the news release. "The evidence keeps accumulating that a progenitor of syphilis came from the New World with Columbus' crew and rapidly evolved into the venereal disease that remains with us today."

The researchers suggested someone sailing with Columbus brought Treponema -- the bacteria that causes syphilis -- to Europe. This type of bacteria also causes other diseases that are spread through skin-to-skin or oral contact in tropical climates. Their theory is that the bacteria mutated into the sexually transmitted form to survive in the cooler and more sanitary conditions of Europe.

"In reality, it appears that venereal syphilis was the byproduct of two different populations meeting and exchanging a pathogen," Zuckerman said. "It was an adaptive event, the natural selection of a disease, independent of morality or blame."

The researchers said more study is needed to confirm their findings. "The origin of syphilis is a fascinating, compelling question," Zuckerman said. "The current evidence is pretty definitive, but we shouldn't close the book and say we're done with the subject. The great thing about science is constantly being able to understand things in a new light."

Justin Bieber Has 'It,' Mark Wahlberg Says1676492

'I'm pretty intuitive,' actor tells MTV News about why he wanted to work with the pop star on an upcoming basketball-themed drama.

Mark Wahlberg surprised movie fans everywhere when he announced plans to hook up with Justin Bieber on the big screen. But when MTV News caught up with the "Contraband" star recently, he explained why he wanted to work with the teen phenom on the basketball-themed drama.

"Intuition. I'm pretty intuitive," he said of why he thinks shooting a film with the pop star is the right choice. "I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it's there." Of course, if it doesn't come easily to the rookie actor, Wahlberg has a backup plan: "It's there — and if not, I will extract it." When MTV News caught up with Wahlberg and Bieber earlier this year at the MTV Movie Awards, they opened up a bit more about the in-the-works flick. "Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of, like, 'The Color of Money,' " Wahlberg said of his "old guy" role. "So I get this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy. I'm like, 'Cool, let's get Jack [Nicholson]. Let's get Robert De Niro. Let's get Robert Duvall.' And they go, 'What about Garrett Hedlund?' I'm like, 'For what?' " he further recalled. "They're like, 'For the young guy.' "

Bieber, who previously appeared on the big screen in his 3-D concert flick "Never Say Never," said he hopes to be on a film set by sometime next summer. And while he kept his plans hush-hush, he added that his team is "working on the script." For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.

Nelson says Dems shouldn't concede his Senate seat (AP)

OMAHA, Neb. ? Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson said Wednesday he doesn't think his decision not to run for a third term next year will automatically give the seat to Republicans, who already hold the other four spots in Nebraska's congressional delegation.

Nelson told The Associated Press that the timing of his announcement this week shouldn't be a problem for Democrats in 2012.

"There has always been plenty of time for the campaign. If it's not too late for Republicans to get in, why is it too late for Democrats to get in?" Nelson said.

Other Democrats have acknowledged they face an uphill battle to keep Nelson's seat away from the GOP, which must pick up four Senate seats in next year's election to regain control of the chamber.

The Republican primary field already is crowded with Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, state Treasurer Don Stenberg, state Sen. Deb Fischer, and investment adviser Pat Flynn, and no Democrats are lined up to take Nelson's place in the conservative state.

Nelson said he's confident he still could have won re-election because his poll numbers have improved despite being hammered by conservatives for supporting the federal health care overhaul. He also said national GOP leaders seemed concerned because they recently tried to recruit Republican Gov. Dave Heineman as a candidate.

"I think that says a lot about what people thought about my chances of winning from the other side," Nelson said. "I think they were worried about that."

Nelson declined to speculate about Democrats who might seek his seat, or say whether he would use any of the campaign cash he'd amassed in support of other candidates.

The former governor and two-term senator had more than $3 million in campaign money on hand last month, about twice his nearest competitor. Federal election rules allow him to give at least some of that money to other candidates and political action groups or donate it to charity. But any funds donated specifically for the 2012 general election campaign will have to be returned.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said most retiring politicians hang onto their campaign money and donate it to candidates later, especially if they intend to become lobbyists.

"Money in Washington helps buy you influence, and now Ben Nelson has $3 million to spread around," said Sloan, who leads the nonpartisan watchdog group.

Nelson survived his nearly two decades representing his heavily conservative state by carving a path down the political center, and said Wednesday he thinks there still is room for moderate politicians in Washington. But he said the current political climate makes bipartisanship more difficult.

"There's no doubt about it because we've seen a great deal of polarization in the country," he said. "And the polarization in Washington is immense," Nelson said, "but on the right issues you can still work with people."

Nelson, 70, said he consulted family, friends and current and former Senate colleagues before deciding that he wanted to be free to go hunting, spend more time with his family, travel and pursue other opportunities while he's still in good health.

"For 20 years, I've been doing things on behalf of the people of Nebraska and putting things off," he said. "There comes a time when you have to make that decision, do you continue to put things off and do what you've been doing?"

Intel's 32nm Medfield SoC specs and benchmarks leak

Medfield
Intel's Medfield may still be a ways from breaking into the smartphone and tablet market, but we're finally starting to get some concrete details on its specs and capabilities. VR-Zone got the nitty gritty on Chipzilla's first true SoC and it looks almost ready to run with the big dogs. A reference tablet, running at 1.6GHz with 1GB of RAM (which also packs Bluetooth, WiFi and FM radio) was put through some Android benchmarks and held it's own against a Tegra 2 and a Snapdragon MSM8260 -- which pulled a 7,500 and 8,000 in Caffeinemark 3, respectively. The admittedly higher clocked Atom scored an impressive 10,500, though power consumption on the pre-production chips was a bit higher than anticipated. At idle, the fledgling Medfield was sucking down 2.6W and spiking to 3.6W under load. Ultimately Intel hopes to cut those numbers to 2W at idle and 2.6W while pushing out HD video -- not far off from current-gen ARM SoC. Lets not forget though, benchmarks only tell part of the story -- we'll be waiting to see working hardware before declaring a victor.

Intel's 32nm Medfield SoC specs and benchmarks leak originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 16:04:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Brother MFC-J625dw

The Brother MFC-J625dw ($130 street) has a good feature set for a low-priced multifunction printer (MFP). It?s geared primarily to business use but with some photo-centric features as well. It?s fast at business printing, with decent if unspectacular output quality. Though other alternatives, like the Brother MFC-J825dw ($150 street, 4 stars), offer additional features for slightly more money, the MFC-J625dw has a lot to offer a home office or micro office for its price.

The MFC-J625dw can print, copy, scan, and fax. It can fax either from a computer (PC Fax), or work as a standalone fax machine. It has media-card slots for SD and Memory Stick formats, and a port for a USB thumb drive or PictBridge-enabled camera. The 1.9-inch color touch screen with touch panel controls can be used for previewing photos as well as for navigating menus.

This MFP is compatible with the Brother iPrint&Scan app, which allows you to print or scan from an Apple, Android, or Windows 7 Phone mobile device on the same wireless network.

The MFC-J625dw, matte black with a glossy black, textured lid, is reasonably compact, measuring 7.1 by 15.9 by 14.9 inches (HWD) and weighing 19.8 pounds. Its 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) lets you copy, scan, or fax multi-page documents unattended. It has a 100-sheet paper tray, a little scanty for home-office use, but it combines it with a 20-sheet tray for holding 4-by-6 photo paper.

The MFC-J625dw connects to a PC via a USB cable, or to a network via WiFi (802.11b/g/n), though it lacks an Ethernet port. I tested it over a USB connection using a computer running Windows Vista.

Brother MFC-J625dw

Print Speed

The Brother MFC-J625dw printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic?s hardware and software) at 4.3 effective pages per minute (ppm), edging the Brother MFC-J825dw, which averaged 4.0 ppm on the same tests. The Editors? Choice Epson Stylus NX625 ($149.99 direct, 4 stars) also printed out the suite at a 4-ppm clip.

The MFC-J625dw averaged 1:59 in printing 4-by-6 photos, tying the MFC-J825dw, while the NX625 averaged only 58 seconds per print.

Output Quality

The MFC-J625?s overall output quality was a touch below par compared with inkjet MFPs in its price range. Text quality was average, while graphics and photo quality were slightly sub-par. Text quality was fine for schoolwork or general business use, but not for documents with which you want to create a good impression, such as a resume, or if you have a need for very small fonts.

With graphics, the colors seemed undersaturated, giving the output a slightly pale or faded look. Other issues included dithering (solid areas appearing as fine dot patterns) and minor banding (a regular pattern of faint stripes). The output was suitable for schoolwork or general business use and even PowerPoint handouts, though I?d be hesitant to hand them to potential clients or others who I was trying to impress through their visual appearance.

Photo quality was a tad below par for an inkjet. For the most part, they weren?t quite up to what we?d expect from drugstore prints. Some colors seemed a bit off (for example, in a couple of illustrations flesh tones and other details showed too much red). Detail was generally good in darker areas, but in some cases there was substantial loss of detail in brighter areas.

Other Issues

Two nice touches are the 2-year warranty, and a relatively low claimed running, 3.8 cents per monochrome page and 10.7 cents per color page.

The Brother MFC-J625dw is a well-equipped home-office MFP available for a modest price; it also has some photo-centric features like the ability to print from memory cards and USB thumb drives. It?s fast, and has acceptable if not spectacular output. For $20 more, the Editors? Choice Brother MFC-J825dw offers similar speed and output quality, plus additional features like a larger (3-inch) LCD, Ethernet connectivity, and the ability to print on optical disks. If those aren?t important to you, the MFC-J625dw could well be your home-office MFP of choice.

Stricken Russian boat sailing from Antarctic ice (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? A Russian fishing boat that was stuck for 12 days while in danger of sinking in the frigid waters off Antarctica began a trek through 100 miles (160 kilometers) of sea ice to open water on Wednesday, New Zealand officials said.

The Sparta hit underwater ice Dec. 16 that tore a 1-foot (30-centimeter) hole in its hull. Heavy ice in the Ross Sea prevented help from reaching the stricken vessel for 10 days, forcing the Sparta's crew to pump out near-frozen sea water to keep the ship afloat while awaiting rescue. At one point, some of the crew boarded life rafts. The crew has 15 Russians, 16 Indonesians and one Ukrainian.

The South Korean icebreaker Araon finally arrived on Monday, and repairs to the hole were completed by Wednesday morning, New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Center said. The Araon then began escorting the Sparta through the ice and toward the open ocean.

Both ships are expected to clear the ice pack within 12 hours of moving, rescue center spokesman Chris Henshaw said.

"The inside (of the hull hole) has been all fixed up ? they used a cement box to fill it in," Henshaw told New Zealand's National Radio. A cement box provides a temporary fix to the torn steel plating to make the vessel seaworthy.

The crew had not been able to weld a steel plate over the hole because of safety concerns, he said.

The Araon, a polar research ship, will guide the Sparta to ice-free open ocean about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away, where it will be joined by its sister ship for the 2,200-mile (3,700 kilometer) journey to the New Zealand port of Lyttelton. It will dry dock there for permanent repairs, Henshaw said.

New Zealand soldiers serving overseas have sent Christmas messages home.

Lieutenant Colonel Brett Wellington, the commanding officer in Bamyan, Afghanistan, said the troops appreciate all the wonderful support from home.

The soldiers shared their messages via video, while sitting in front of a New Zealand flag and All Black flag.

Meanwhile, New Zealand Army troops in Egypt are in for a hot Christmas Day.

Private George O'Brien said while the mornings in Sinai are cool, it gets extremely hot throughout the day.

He said normally in New Zealand he would go to the beach and have a swim on Christmas Day, but in Egypt he can see the beach, though there is no water.

Private O'Brien said instead Christmas Day in Egypt will involve a game of cricket against Australian Defence Force personnel, and a Christmas dinner with a Kiwi flavour.

For our Defence Force personnel in Antarctica it will be a white Christmas.

Lieutenant Commander David Washer said they are hoping to see some penguins on Christmas day.

He said most personnel get the day off.

Washer said they have put Christmas trees up and have decorated the place, and they have also been taking part in 'secret Santa'.

Severe congenital disorder successfully treated in a mouse model for the first time

ScienceDaily (Dec. 22, 2011) ? Using a mouse model, Heidelberg University Hospital researchers have for the first time successfully treated a severe congenital disorder in which sugar metabolism is disturbed. The team headed by Prof. Christian K?rner, group leader at the Center for Child and Adolescent Medicine, demonstrated that if female mice are given mannose with their drinking water prior to mating and during pregnancy, their offspring will develop normally even if they carry the genetic mutation for the congenital disorder. The team's outstanding work will contribute to better understanding of the molecular processes of this metabolic disease, along with the key stages in embryonic development, and may offer a therapeutic approach for the first time.

The Heidelberg-based researchers also collaborated with colleagues working with Prof. Hermann-Josef Gr?ne of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)'s Division of Cellular and Molecular Pathology in Heidelberg. Their results have now been published online in the journal Nature Medicine in advance of their publication in the print edition.

Rare disease: Approx. 1,000 children affected

So far 1,000 children worldwide are affected by congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG), which are classified as rare diseases. Affecting around 800 children, type CDG-Ia is most frequent. The number of unreported cases is high, however. Children with CDG are severely physically and mentally disabled, with approx. 20 percent dying before the age of two. To date, no therapy has been available to treat the disorder.

CDG-Ia is caused by mutations in the genetic information for the enzyme Phosphomannomutase 2 which is involved in important glycosylation processes: Mannose-1-phosphate is not produced in sufficient quantities. As a result, glycosylation malfunctions, meaning that sugar chains that normally aid in form, stability and function of the glycoproteins are not completely attached to the body's proteins or in some cases, are not attached at all. The lack of oligosaccharide chains leads to impairment of neurological, growth and organ development. The disorder only manifests if the baby inherits a mutated gene from both the mother and the father. The parents, who each carry one mutated and one "healthy" copy of the gene, do not exhibit any symptoms.

Mice take up mannose in drinking water

The mouse model developed by Prof. K?rner and his team is characterized by mutations in the Phosphomannomutase 2 gene and demonstrates reduced enzyme activity, comparable to CDG-Ia in man. In their current study, the scientists exploited the ability of mannose to cross the placental barrier. This means that if the pregnant mouse takes up mannose, it also reaches the embryos in the uterus.

"One week prior to mating, we began giving the female mice mannose with their drinking water," explained biochemist Prof. K?rner. The additional mannose supply up to birth increased the mannose levels in the embryos' blood. "The mice were born without defects and also after they were born, developed without any symptoms of the disorder, even if they no longer took up any mannose," K?rner added. The successful studies performed by the Heidelberg University Hospital researchers clearly show the key role played by the supply of proteins with sugar chains during embryonic development.

New therapeutic approach

"Clinical studies in the U.S. and Germany have already been performed in which children with CDG-Ia were given mannose after they were born, either orally or by intravenous infusion. Unfortunately, these attempts have not been successful," explained Dr. Christian Thiel, head of the laboratory. "This means that the critical point at which it is possible to influence development must be during development in the uterus." For women with a risk of CDG-Ia, administering mannose during pregnancy may serve as a new therapeutic approach.

Department of Health: Consultation on cancer of unknown primary and community skin measures

23 December, 2011

A draft version of the cancer of unknown primary measures and the community skin cancer measures are being issued today for a three month consultation by stakeholders.

The purpose of this consultation is not to reopen the extensive consultation on the guidance, but rather to invite comments on the contents of the draft measures, for example:

  • is the wording of each quality measure clear?
  • what additional, if any, supplementary guidance on the quality measure is required?
  • are there any important gaps?

The measures included in the manual for cancer services identify characteristics of services that should help those involved in planning, commissioning, organising and providing cancer services to identify gaps in provision, and to support the quality assurance of services enabling quality improvements.? The development of cancer measures is an ongoing process and reflects NICE quality standards and clinical guidelines and revisions to existing NICE guidance.

The draft cancer of unknown primary measures reflects the NICE clinical guideline CG104: Diagnosis and management of metastatic malignant disease of unknown primary origin, July 2010.

Corruption at the top dominates football in 2011

By STUART CONDIE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:01 a.m. ET Dec. 21, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Football in 2011 was dominated by events off the field rather than on it.

Barcelona and Lionel Messi continued to provide some of the most sparkling performances in the sport's long history and Uruguay further overshadowed Brazil and Argentina at the top of the South American game, but headlines around the world were dominated by allegations of corruption and bribery at FIFA.

The sport's governing body was beset by allegations as behind-the-scenes politicking was thrust into the spotlight by the fallout from its 2010 decision to give future World Cup tournaments to Russia and Qatar.

Sepp Blatter was re-elected unopposed as FIFA president but the year was almost out before he announced details of long-promised reforms.

Blatter's position at the top of FIFA was secured after his only rival for the presidency, Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar, was forced to withdraw from the June election over bribery allegations that later led to a lifetime ban from the sport.

Blatter has hinted that his new Independent Governance Committee could examine cases including the decision to award the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 event to Qatar. Even the 10-year-old kickbacks case that led to former FIFA President Joao Havelange's resignation from the IOC is being picked over.

The 95-year-old Havelange, Blatter's mentor and predecessor, joined the IOC in 1963 and was its longest-standing member. He resigned in December, days before he faced possible suspension for allegedly taking a $1 million kickback from World Cup marketing deals while FIFA president.

The IOC closed its ethics investigation into Havelange after his resignation.

The appointment of a University of Basel professor - who formerly served on an independent inquiry team examining alleged corruption in the Iraqi oil-for-food program - to spearhead reforms lends credibility to Blatter's committee.

But whether a body widely criticized for a lack of transparency and accountability can be persuaded of the need for comprehensive change remains to be seen.

Blatter was forced to apologize in November for causing outrage among players, officials and even sponsors by suggesting that racial incidents between players on the field could be settled by a handshake at the end of a game.

The topic of racism surfaced several times through the year, with England captain John Terry and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez both accused of abusing opponents, while France coach Laurent Blanc came close to resigning following a row about quotas at training academies.

Blanc acknowledged that his crude language in a conversation with French Football Federation colleagues was wrong and offensive but said the debate over whether dual nationals of African descent should be in the French system remained valid.

Blanc was cleared of discrimination by the FFF.

Another immediate challenge facing Blatter and FIFA is the state of Brazil's preparations to host the 2014 World Cup, which are mired in infighting, corruption allegations and a simple lack of progress.

Organizing committee head Ricardo Teixeira - himself linked to the ISL kickback case that claimed Havelange - was embroiled in allegations of bribery and money laundering that saw Brazil sports minister Orlando Silva forced out in October.

The Brazilian government has yet to pass the necessary laws to allow the country to stage the tournament and stadium construction is behind schedule.

"The executive committee is worried about that," Blatter said. "I will myself take up the World Cup in a presidential level and in the first or second month of next year I will go and meet the head of state."

And in a sign of the tensions between various factions, Teixeira snubbed Pele from the 2014 qualifying draw in Rio in July only to see state president Dilma Rouseff appoint the former national team great as her government's World Cup ambassador.

Brazilian football was dealt a series of blows in 2011, with the death of former captain Socrates after a lifetime of heavy drinking, a quarterfinal exit at the Copa America and Santos' 4-0 drubbing by Barcelona in the final of the Club World Cup.

Brazil had already failed to impress at Copa America before it missed all four of its penalty kicks in a 2-0 shootout loss to Paraguay. If there was any consolation, it was that rival Argentina exited at the same stage and in the same manner against eventual champion Uruguay.

With Diego Forlan and Suarez up front, Uruguay built on its surprise run to the 2010 World Cup semifinals and routed Paraguay 3-0 in the final to win its first continental title since 1995.

There was no such shift in power in Europe, where world and European champion Spain remained the team to beat.

With Spain stars including Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Sergio Busquets in its squad, Barcelona dominated the club scene with a third straight domestic league title, a third Champions League title in six years and the 13th trophy of coach Pep Guardiola's 3 1/2-year tenure at the Club World Cup.

Predictably, though, Barcelona's star player wasn't Spanish.

Messi continued to draw comparisons with all-time great Diego Maradona with his seemingly unstoppable dribbling, rampant goal scoring and imaginative set-up play.

The Argentine finished the 2010-11 season with 53 goals in all competitions - including one in the 3-1 Champions League final win over Manchester United - and is almost certain to win FIFA's world player of the year award for a third straight year.

"We have good players in the team, but he makes the difference," Guardiola said. "We can compete, but without him we would not have that qualitative leap that we do have with him."

Elsewhere, American Samoa won its first ever match, North Korea was kicked out of the next Women's World Cup after five players tested positive for steroids at this year's tournament, more than 100 players at the Under-17 World Cup in Mexico tested positive for clenbuterol after eating local meat, and Wales manager Gary Speed was founded hanged at home.

But if there was a feel-good story, it was Japan's success at the Women's World Cup in Germany.

Their country devastated by a tsunami and earthquake that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing, the Japanese players vowed they would inspire their homeland. The did it with an improbable victory in the final, equalizing against the favored United States in the 81st minute and again with three minutes of extra time remaining before winning a shootout 3-1.

Millionaire convicted of killing wife gets 30-year sentence (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) ? A millionaire convicted of second-degree murder for the shooting death of his wife in their Isleworth, Florida, mansion in 2009 was sentenced on Friday to 30 years in prison.

At the September trial of Bob Ward, 63, jurors heard a 911 call in which he told dispatchers that he had shot his wife, Diane. His lawyers said that Diane Ward was killed when the couple struggled over a gun and it accidentally discharged. His lawyers also said that Diane Ward might have been suicidal.

State experts calculated that Diane Ward was shot in the face from a distance of 18 inches, and testified that it would have been impossible for her to do that. Prosecutors said that she had not seemed suicidal in conversations that day with friends and family, and had just opened a Facebook account.

Bob Ward was reported to have been under stress at the time of the shooting from a business bankruptcy and home foreclosure. The year before the shooting, Ward filed for bankruptcy protection for his real estate development company and stopped making $17,000-monthly mortgage payments on his home, according to news reports at the time of the shooting. The seven-bedroom estate was listed for sale at the time for more than $5 million.

Isleworth, where the couple lived, is a gated subdivision near Orlando known for a car accident involving Tiger Woods, also in 2009. Woods' accident triggered the revelation of several extramarital affairs and led to his divorce.

This press release is available in Spanish.

In this meeting of the JWG - the work group made up of European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) - the last revision of the text was carried out that will make up norm EN 45545, which affects the entire railroad industry, the operators, fire-testing laboratories and standardization entities. This meeting took place on the Legans campus of the UC3M, under the auspices of the Master's in Fire Safety Engineering Program, from the Pedro Juan de Lastanosa Institute.

The final version of the text made within the framework of this meeting will be submitted to formal vote in the standardization committees of the different countries for its approval, and the norm will foreseeably be published at the end of 2012. . "After 20 years of intense discussion and debate between industry, operators and laboratories, and after incorporating important results from research, agreement was at least reached to consider a text that will guarantee the same level of safety for railway passengers in all countries," UC3M Professor Jos Luis Prez Daz, the Spanish representative at JWG pointed out. As the coordinator of the mirror group, its function is to transmit the different discussions to the agents involved in Spain, as well as the industries and operators, and in addition, to carry out these discussions from the point of view of these Spanish agents.

This is basic norm for railway vehicles to circulate freely all over Europe, according to the experts. Its purpose is to unify fire safety criteria on passenger trains in the different European countries which adopt it, so that trains complying can circulate without problems. "It improves safety, but it also facilitates free circulation and free competition in the railway sector," Professor Prez Daz asserted, director of the Master's in Fire Safety Engineering Program, from the Pedro Juan de Lastanosa Institute.

PFT: Giants' Boley accused of child abuse

Detroit Lions v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

We handle the big injury stories Friday in the rumor mill.

The rest goes right here, in America?s most enticing weekly segment about the injury report.

1. Here are the players were updated during the day on the rumor mill: Kevin Smith, Andre Johnson, Colt McCoy, Justin Tuck, and?Kyle Orton.

2. The Eagles are ready to go, except for defensive end Darryl Tapp who is doubtful with a broken rib.

3. The Jets get running back Joe McKnight and defensive lineman Mike Devito back in the lineup for their game against Philly.

4. The Packers are short a number of key players once again: Linebacker Desmond?Bishop (calf), Chad Clifton (hamstring), wideout Greg Jennings (knee), and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (concussion) are all out. Running back Brandon Saine (concussion), James Starks (ankle), and guard Josh Sitton (knee) are questionable. Starks says he?ll play.

5. The Dolphins list quarterback?Matt Moore (head/neck), tackle Jake Long (back), and tight end Anthony Fasano (ribs) as questionable. They all practiced on a limited basis and look likely to face the Bills. ?Linebacker Koa Misi (shoulder) is out.

6. Mark Ingram is out again for the Saints because of his toe injury.

7. The Bills will be without Peter King?s favorite tight end Scott Chandler, who is out with an ankle injury.

8. The Bucs will be without receiver?Arrelious Benn on Saturday night against the Cowboys.?Defensive end Michael Bennett (toe), defensive tackle Brian Price (ankle) and wideout Sammie Stroughter (knee) are all questionable. Bennett is the longest shot of the questionables.

9. Dallas has a number of questionable starters: cornerback?Michael Jenkins (shoulder), center Phil Costa (concussion), and linebacker DeMarcus Ware (neck). Costa has been cleared, but still may sit.?Ware is a safe bet to play.

10. Three Broncos secondary members are questionable: David Bruton (achilles), Brian Dawkins (neck), and cornerback Andre? Goodman (concussion). Only Bruton missed practice all week.

11. ?The Patriots listed safety Patrick Chung and tackle Sebastian Vollmer as doubtful. That way they can downgrade them to out on Saturday and then I can get a cheap post out of it while trying to cram my ?family time? in for the week.

12. Devin Hester (ankle) is questionable for the Bears. Jay Cutler (thumb), Matt Forte (knee), and Sam Hurd (5-10 kilos) are all out.

13. The Panthers list tackle Jordan Gross (ankle) as questionable for Sunday?s game. They really missed him last week, but he returned for a limited practice Friday.

14. Kyle Orton is officially probable (thumb) for the Chiefs. He?ll start on Sunday against the Packers.

15. The Bengals will likely be without running back Brian Leonard, who is doubtful with a knee injury. The Bengals get Carlos Dunlap back. Tackle Andre Smith (ankle) is questionable after not practicing Friday.

16. The Raiders will be without wideout?Jacoby Ford (foot) and running back Darren McFadden (foot) yet again. Cornerback Chris Johnson is away from the team following the death of his sister. He?s out.

The team could get Denarius Moore (foot) back. He?s questionable. Also questionable:?safety Michael Huff (hamstring) and running back Taiwan Jones (hamstring). They didn?t practice all week. Oakland is very banged up.

17. Half of the Ravens team is questionable: Linebacker Ray?Lewis (toe), cornerback Lardarius Webb (toe), kicker Billy Cundiff (calf), ?guard Ben Grubbs (toe), defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (back), defensive tackle Cory Redding (ankle) and cornerback Chris Carr (back). Lewis is expected to return to the lineup Sunday night.

18. Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb (head) is officially questionable. He was limited in practice during the week, but the Cardinals? beat writers think John Skelton will get the start.

19. The Titans list quarterback?Matt Hasselbeck (calf) as questionable. He?s expected to start. Look for wideout Nate Washington (ankle) to play despite being questionable. He?s been playing in pain for weeks.

Time short for S&P to end 2011 higher (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? With two weeks left in the trading year, the euro zone debt crisis will remain the primary impediment to pushing the S&P 500 index into positive territory for 2011.

Uncertainty over progress in the region, along with the potential for credit rating downgrades on euro zone countries, have kept investors on edge and market volatility high.

Even with a fairly busy U.S. economic calendar, which includes a batch of data on the housing market, the final reading on gross domestic product and durable goods orders, markets will focus on developments from Europe.

"What everybody is going to look at is the same thing they've been looking at -- every time a German official opens their mouth we get crushed," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services in Charlotte, Vermont.

"I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Santa Claus is out there. But we've got to see something."

The benchmark S&P 500 index (.SPX)(.INX) is down about 3 percent for the year and would need to climb above 1,257.64 in order to end higher for the year.

A rally by stocks on Friday fizzled, and the market ended with only modest gains after the latest credit warning about possible downgrades of European nations. For the week, the Dow fell 2.7 percent, the S&P lost 2.9 percent and the Nasdaq was down 3.5 percent.

Italy's prime minister urged European policymakers on Friday to beware of dividing the continent in the effort to contain the debt crisis, warning against a "short-term hunger for rigor" in some countries, in a swipe at Germany.

Stocks have been whipsawed as investors weigh the threat from the euro zone crisis against modest improvement in U.S. economic data and stocks that many regard as cheap.

"There do appear to be some improving economic indicators domestically, but it's hard to see how they win the day if Europe continues to be a big concern. It's not like the valuations are at such bargain-basement prices that it becomes a one-way bet," said Stephen Massocca, managing director at Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco.

As volumes begin to dry up and market moves become more exaggerated during the holiday period, the volatility may help lift the stock market into the plus column.

CHANCE OF RALLY

"Can you see an upside rally? Certainly, because you are going to have some asset managers in the end who are going to try and just push it so the market ends at the very least flat on the year, if not higher," said Ken Polcari, managing director at ICAP Equities in New York.

"If there is going to be a rally at all, it will happen on light volume because there will be fewer and fewer participants. When there is less volume, you do have the ability to have those exaggerated moves, but people will take advantage of that."

Volatility in individual shares could also be affected by corporate earnings preannouncements. There have been 97 negative earnings preannouncements issued by S&P 500 corporations for the fourth quarter, compared to 26 positive preannouncements, resulting in a negative-to-positive ratio of 3.7. That's the highest in 10 years, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Companies that have provided outlooks in recent weeks include DuPont (DD.N), Intel Corp (INTC.O), United Technologies Corp (UTX.N) and Texas Instruments Inc (TXN.N).

Unexpected management shakeups could also be on the horizon and increase the tumult in stocks. Both Cablevision Systems Corp (CVC.N) and the New York Times Co (NYT.N) saw high-level executives suddenly leave their posts.

But stock movements next week will ultimately be dictated by actions taken in Europe, with the light volume exacerbating market swings.

"The only thing that is going to be of any interest is certainly the continuing headlines on Europe, whether or not they come any closer to what looks like a potential agreement," said Polcari.

"You may get a little bit of a push to the 1,250 to 1,270 range, but much beyond that I don't see why it would go any higher unless you get some explosive announcement out of Europe."

Seattle locks up MF Rosales to multi-year deal

updated 10:18 p.m. ET Dec. 13, 2011

TUKWILA, Wash. - The Seattle Sounders FC and midfielder Mauro Rosales have agreed on a long awaited multi-year extension after the Argentinian's breakout debut season in Seattle.

The club announced the extension on Tuesday night, but did not release terms of the new deal.

Rosales was an overwhelming choice as Major League Soccer's newcomer of the year in 2011 and finished third in the league with a franchise-record 13 assists in 26 league games. Rosales also added five goals.

Rosales credited his agent Dario Sala and Sounders management for locking up his future with the club. Seattle general manager Adrian Hanauer said the team was always confident of getting a deal done.

Rosales, 30, previously played for Buenos Aries power River Plate before signing with Seattle.

As Voyager 1 nears edge of solar system, scientists look back

ScienceDaily (Dec. 13, 2011) ? In 1977, Jimmy Carter was sworn in as president, Elvis died, Virginia park ranger Roy Sullivan was hit by lightning a record seventh time and two NASA space probes destined to turn planetary science on its head launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The identical spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, were launched in the summer and programmed to pass by Jupiter and Saturn on different paths. Voyager 2 went on to visit Uranus and Neptune, completing the "Grand Tour of the Solar System," perhaps the most exciting interplanetary mission ever flown. University of Colorado Boulder scientists, who designed and built identical instruments for Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, were as stunned as anyone when the spacecraft began sending back data to Earth.

The discoveries by Voyager started piling up: Twenty-three new planetary moons at Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune; active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon, Io; Jupiter's ring system; organic smog shrouding Saturn's moon, Titan; the braided, intertwined structure of Saturn's rings; the solar system's fastest winds (on Neptune, about 1,200 miles per hour); and nitrogen geysers spewing from Neptune's moon, Triton.

Amazingly, both spacecraft have kept on chugging (if one can call 35,000 miles per hour chugging). NASA announced last week that Voyager 1 -- about 11 billion miles from Earth -- has now sailed to the edge of the solar system and is expected to punch its way into interstellar space in a time span ranging from a few months to a few years. Voyager 2 is not far behind, but on a different trajectory.

Charlie Hord, a former planetary scientist at CU-Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, remembers the salad days of the Voyager program, which was managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Hord, the principal investigator for a time on the LASP instrument known as a photopolarimeter built for Voyager, still shakes his head in wonder as he recalls some of the discoveries.

"All of the scientists were dazzled by the pictures of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn coming back," recalled Hord, 74, who still lives in Boulder. "To finally look at them up close was the most remarkable thing I've ever seen in my life." Since the early Voyager days were pre-Internet, "We used to send people over to the JPL newsroom to steal press kits so we could look at the pictures taken by the imaging team," he laughs.

The LASP photopolarimeter, a small telescope that measured the intensity and polarization of light at different wavelengths, was used for a variety of observations during the mission. The instrument helped scientists distinguish between rock, dust, frost, ice and meteor material. And it helped scientists determine the structure of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, which Hord called "a giant hurricane that has blown for 200 years," as well as the properties of the clouds and atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn Uranus and Neptune, and Saturn's largest moon, Titan.

The CU-Boulder instrument also was used to learn more about the makeup of the Io torus, a doughnut-shaped ring around Jupiter formed by volcanic eruptions from its moon, Io, as well as determining the distribution of ring material orbiting Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and the surface compositions of the outer planet moons.

One of the finest mission moments for Hord was analyzing the data returned from the photopolarimeter when it was locked on the star Delta Scorpii as it emerged from behind Saturn and passed behind the elegant rings in a "stellar occultation" when the light from a star is blocked by an intervening object. The processed photopolarimeter data showed each ring was made up of numerous smaller ringlets. "They were beautiful -- they looked just like the grooves on a phonograph record," he said.

On the off chance either spacecraft is encountered by an alien civilization, each are carrying what are known as "Golden Records" -- gold-plated copper, audiovisual phonograph records with greetings in 54 languages, photos of people and places on Earth, the sounds of surf, wind, thunder, birds and whales, diagrams of DNA and snippets of music ranging from Bach and Beethoven to guitarist Chuck Berry's classic rock-and-roll song, Johnny B. Goode. The spacecraft even carries a stylus set up in the correct position so that aliens could immediately play the record, named "Murmurs from Earth" by Carl Sagan, who conceived the Golden Record effort.

"I thought adding the Golden Record to the mission was a neat thing to do," said Hord. A guitar player himself who performs jazz and Big Band music with a trio that visits Boulder retirement homes, Hord recalled that JPL threw the Voyager team a party to celebrate the end of Voyager 2's Grand Tour as it passed by Neptune in 1989 (Pluto was in a distant part of its orbit at the time). "We even had Chuck Berry playing his guitar on the steps of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory," he said. "It was really something."

In 1990, Voyager 1 turned around one last time and took a portrait of the solar system -- a sequence of photos that revealed six of the nine planets in an orbital dance. From nearly 4 billion miles away, Earth took up only a single pixel.

"To me, Voyager was the most fun and interesting planetary mission ever," said Hord, who enlisted the help of then-graduate students Carol Stoker (now a NASA planetary scientist) and Wayne Pryor (now a professor at Central Arizona University) to analyze data from the mission. Over its lifetime, the CU-Boulder photopolarimeter science team also included LASP Professor Larry Esposito, Senior Research Associate Ian Stewart, retired faculty members Karen Simmons, Charles Barth and Robert West, as well as tireless work by many undergraduate and graduate students.

Esposito, who is still at LASP and is the principal investigator on a $12 million CU-Boulder instrument package aboard NASA's Cassini Mission to Saturn, said his biggest thrill of the Voyager mission was the Neptune fly-by in 1989 when the gas giant "went from being a small blurry dot to a planet with bright clouds and numerous moons and rings. "Triton erupted before our eyes, and Neptune's partial rings were punctuated and variable like a type of sausage that the French make."

Then-CU President Gordon Gee was so impressed with the blue image the LASP team made of Neptune's ring system that he used it on his Christmas cards, said Esposito, a professor in the astrophysical and planetary sciences department.

Esposito believes the biggest discovery by CU-Boulder's Voyager photopolarimeter team was the intricate structure of Saturn's F ring -- a ring he discovered in 1979 using data from NASA's Pioneer 11 mission. The CU-Boulder team determined the faint F ring was made up of three separate ringlets that appeared to be braided together, and that the inner and outer limits of the ring were controlled by two small "shepherd satellites."

In addition, Esposito said that density waves -- ripple-like features in the rings caused by the influence of Saturn's moons -- allowed the team to estimate the weight and age of Saturn's rings.

As for Hord, the Casper, Wyo., native went on to be the principal investigator for two spectrometers designed for NASA's Galileo Mission to Jupiter that launched in 1989 to tour the Jovian system, including its bizarre moons. Hord officially retired in 1997, but returns to campus for occasional visits with his colleagues.

In 40,000 years, Voyager 1 will float within 9.3 trillion miles of the star AC+793888 in the constellation Camelopardalis. In 296,000 years, Voyager 2 will pass within 25 trillion miles of Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Perhaps on the way, the spacecraft will encounter some musically inclined aliens up for a little Bach, Beethoven or Berry.
