Automotive Historians Name Aaron Severson's Ate Up With Motor ...

Criticism is what we do around here. We critique cars, car companies, politicians, consumers and, of course, other automotive writers and publications. Of course if you?re negative about everything, you?re a curmudgeon, not a critic. Criticism, if it is to have any value, must be fair, willing to praise as well as to demerit. TTAC has taken its share of shots against automotive websites, traditional buff books and the Detroit daily newspapers. So much so, in fact, that some of our readers have offered their own criticism that we unduly snipe at others. I don?t agree with that criticism, but it is easy and tempting to dwell on the negative and there are indeed many worthy publications and writers that deserve to be praised as much as the hacks deserve to be exposed. When I read that Aaron Severson?s masterful automotive history site, Ate Up With Motor, has won the E.P. Ingersoll Award, given by the Society of Automotive Historians, it was not really a surprise. Ate Up With Motor is the gold standard for online automotive history.

E.P. Ingersoll was the original American autojourno. He founded The Horseless Age, the first car magazine, in 1895. Back in the day it served as both an enthusiast?s publication and a trade journal for the automotive industry. By 1909 motorcars were competing with other motorcars, not horses, so the name was changed to The Automobile. It continues to be the oldest automotive publication still in operation, currently publishing under the Automotive Industries title.

The SAH gives out the E. P. Ingersoll Award ?for the best presentation of automotive history in other than print media? and in the past the Ingersoll award has been given to films, television shows and other websites. The award committee?s criteria are based on historical accuracy and educational value of the nominees. Severson?s work easily surpasses those standards ? I read a lot of automotive history and Aaron?s work is on a high academic level. Sources are cited in detail and there are sidebars on related topics as needed. He?s also pretty religious about making sure he has permission to use the photographs that illustrate his histories. I?m honored that he?s chosen some of my own photographs ? as a matter of fact I respect his work so much that I?ve gone out of my way to shoot specific cars for AUWM?s use. Severson has graciously responded whenever I?ve asked for a source citation for a fact or a quote. Again, these are serious histories, for people with an attention span, they are decidedly not for the TL;DR crowd. Many website editors don?t want you to go much above 1,000 words on any topic because a lot of ?readers? won?t read it all. In comparison, a typical model history at AUWM runs ~5,000 words.

Unlike some of those academic automotive historians, Aaron actually likes cars. Academic histories can be dry reads, focusing more on business than on cars and personalities. AUWM is targeted at the historian and auto enthusiast alike, putting cars and the auto industry in a broader societal context, while informing enthusiasts about the cars and marques they appreciate. Each article focuses on a specific car model, but in doing so the history of the marque making that car is also detailed. Unlike a lot of online automotive histories, you can rely on what he writes. One of the things that I?ve discovered when dabbling in automotive history myself is that you often see the same account repeated in a lot of secondary and tertiary sources that turns out to be based on a single publication. Sometimes that original publication is accurate, like Michael Lamm?s work, sometimes it?s an urban legend, sometimes it?s just one person?s account. If you want to get things correctly, you have to be willing to do more than just checking Wikipedia or doing a cursory internet search. Sometimes it means using these things called books and libraries, like the Detroit Public Library?s National Automotive History Collection. We?ve all had the experience of following a link, looking for information and ending up at a dodgy (as opposed to Dodgey) site. Ate Up With Motor uses no dodgy sources.

One of the SAH?s criteria is that the nominee should use the most recent information available. Aaron?s dedication to getting the historical record straight includes substantially revising stuff he?d previously published when further research merits a revision. When he makes a mistake, he corrects it. AUWM isn?t perfect. It?s a one man operation, and at the level of Severson?s work you can?t expect fresh content at the site every day. Still, it?s literally the first place that I look when I?m looking into the automotive past and it?s nice to see good work get due credit.

Ronnie Schreiber edits Cars In Depth, a realistic perspective on cars & car culture and the original 3D car site. If you found this post worthwhile, you can dig deeper at Cars In Depth. If the 3D thing freaks you out, don?t worry, all the photo and video players in use at the site have mono options. Thanks ? RJS

Sony Xperia VL brings dash of toughened-up LTE to Japan

Sony Xperia VL brings dash of extrathin LTE to Japan

We were intrigued by Sony's Xperia V back at IFA, but deals with specific carriers haven't been very forthcoming. Japan's KDDI is covering that gap by pledging to carry Sony's mid-size Android 4.0 phone as the Xperia VL. Everything we know and (mostly) love about the dust- and water-resistant phone is intact, including that thin sensor-on-lens 720p display, the 13-megapixel camera, the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, NFC and LTE-based 4G. The one question remaining is a definitive release date: Sony will only promise an Xperia VL launch before the end of the year, although there's talk at Impress Watch of a release on November 2nd for ¥30,000 ($381) after carrier discounts. Let's hope for the company's sake that other carriers sign up for the V and VL sooner rather than later.

Black glass holds first Mars soil sample on Earth

Veins of black glass in a meteorite that recently crashed in Morocco contain the first chemical traces of Martian soil brought to Earth. The find represents a rare chance to look closely at ancient surface conditions on Mars.

Robots sent to Mars, such as NASA's Curiosity rover, only have limited capabilities to analyse the soil samples that they take. Until the launch of a sample-return mission, the most thorough way to study Martian rock is via meteorites that originated on Mars, says Hasnaa Chennaoui Aoudjehane of Hassan II University in Casablanca.

In July 2011 people saw a fireball streak across the sky and smash into the Moroccan desert. The 7-kilogram meteorite, dubbed Tissint, broke apart as it fell, and both scientists and private collectors quickly retrieved the fragments.

Initial analysis showed that the rock's chemical composition matches that of a type of Martian basalt. The meteorite was most likely thrown up from the planet about 700,000 years ago as the result of an asteroid impact.

Pristine sample

Tissint is only the fifth Martian meteorite collected promptly after falling to Earth. Most of the 90 or so known Mars rocks that have been found on Earth had been lying around for years. By contrast, the Tissint fragments should provide an unadulterated look at Mars's geology. "It's so fresh, such pristine material," says Aoudjehane.

Her team found that the meteorite is laced with a large amount of bubbly black glass. It contains carbon and nitrogen isotopes that are characteristic of those found in Mars's atmosphere, something that has been seen in other Martian meteorites.

More surprisingly, the glass contains relatively high amounts of light rare-earth elements not found in the rest of the meteorite, including an unusual ratio of cerium isotopes that indicates some of the cerium got oxidised. Conditions that would oxidise cerium are most likely to exist close to Mars's surface.

The team says weakly acidic water may have leached rare-earth elements from Martian soil and deposited them in fractures in surface rocks. Heat from the asteroid impact that ejected Tissint melted the material in the fractures, which crystallised as it cooled to form the black glass.

Further analysis of Tissint should reveal more details of such geochemical processes on Mars, rounding out our picture of the planet's past.

"The history of Mars is interesting for us because it's related to the history of the Earth, and it's important to know how Mars was in the past and how it evolved with the times," says Aoudjehane.

Report: Turkey vows more force against Syria

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A news agency says Turkey's military chief has vowed to respond "with more force" against Syria if shelling from the country continues.

The Dogan news agency says Gen. Necdet Ozel made the comments Wednesday during a visit to a town where shelling from Syria killed five civilians last week. The attack sparked a week of cross-border artillery and mortar exchanges that escalated tensions between the two neighbors.

Turkey has reinforced its border with Syria and Ozel visited the town while inspecting troops along the frontier. His comments came a day after NATO's chief said the alliance was ready to defend Turkey, in a direct warning to Syria.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday Syria was "the bleeding heart of humanity and the whole Islamic world."

(AP) ? The head of the International Monetary Fund on Thursday called for urgent action to tackle Europe's debt problems and an approaching fiscal crisis in the U.S., warning that the struggling world economy is already falling short of even pessimistic expectations.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde, speaking to reporters as the IMF and World Bank held annual meetings in Tokyo, praised recent steps taken by the European Central Bank and European governments, but said "more needs to happen, and faster."

Finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of Seven richest nations also were holding an informal gathering where they were expected to discuss steps to address Europe's debt crisis, weaker growth in Asia and an impending budget impasse in the U.S.

The IMF has scaled back its global growth forecast for 2012 to 3.3 percent from 3.5 percent, and has warned that even its dimmer outlook might prove too optimistic if Europe and the United States fail to resolve their crises.

"We are not expecting a very, very strong recovery. The recovery continues, but it continues more slowly than we had expected earlier this year," said Lagarde. The slowdown is "having a ripple effect on emerging markets, and in particular in Asia."

Lagarde also said two senior Chinese finance officials who cancelled their trip to Tokyo amid a territorial dispute with host Japan will "lose out" by not attending. "Our concern is that they will be missing a great meeting," she said. "We have a lot of substantive issues to discuss."

Diplomatic tensions have flared between the two Asian giants over a cluster of tiny islands in the East China Sea controlled by Japan but also claimed by China. In an apparent sign of Beijing's anger over the issue, People's Bank of China Gov. Zhou Xiaochuan, who was scheduled to give the event's closing speech on Sunday, will not be attending. His deputy will represent him in the meeting and deliver the speech.

Speaking in Beijing, China's foreign minister, Yang Jiechi, described the decision to have Zhou and some other senior finance officials to stay home "completely appropriate."

But much is at stake. Lagarde stressed that economies in Asia are critical to global growth, and hoped that disputes between countries in the region can be resolved for the good of economic cooperation in Asia and the rest of the world.

"We hope that differences, however longstanding, can be resolved harmoniously and expeditiously so that from an economic point of view cooperation can continue ... since we are all very closely interconnected," she said.

Japanese auto sales in China plunged last month, and tens of thousands of Chinese tourists have cancelled trips to Japan, which is depending on China as a source of growth amid the global slowdown. The dispute is also an economic negative for China. Before tensions escalated, China's economy was already slowing and grew at its slowest rate in three years in the second quarter.

Lagarde praised the recent steps to shore up Europe's financial system, which has been burdened by high government debt and weak banks in countries such as Greece and Spain, but stressed that more needs to be done.

The ECB has decided to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds to help lower borrowing costs but countries that want to benefit from that measure need to apply to other euro nations for a bailout first.

European governments have also taken steps to reduce budget deficits. A proposal to design a European banking supervision system, however, has run into obstacles, with Germany wanting more time to finalize details before making the ECB the supervisor of banks.

Greece, Ireland and Portugal have already received bailouts from the IMF, European Central Bank and European Union. Spain has worried investors by declining so far to ask for financial aid from the 17 country grouping that uses the euro currency.

"Action has already occurred," Lagarde said. "But more needs to happen and faster."

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was upbeat about the European moves to stabilize and reform crisis-stricken economies, saying the agreement on handling debts was "a much more promising path."

"The basic thrust of the strategy is right and good," Geithner told a conference on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings. "They're already having traction in improving competitiveness."

Geithner also sought to strike a reassuring tone regarding the threat of the so-called "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and deep spending cuts that will take effect in 2013 unless Congress and the Obama administration resolve a budget impasse.

Lagarde called for "decisive action" on the issue.

The IMF has urged the U.S. to raise the ceiling on the level of debt the government can issue, which is capped by law. In August 2011, a battle between Republicans and Democrats over raising the limit wasn't resolved until the U.S. almost defaulted on its debt.

The Obama administration intends to try to fix the problem before the end of the year, Geithner said. "We're going to take a run at it."

Speaking just weeks before the presidential election, Geithner emphasized the progress made in countering the global financial crisis and reviving growth.

"From my perspective, the U.S. economy is doing significantly better than we had any reason to expect," he said.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim told reporters that while the annual meeting's main preoccupation is staving off recession among the world's most advanced economies, it also needs to lay the foundation for helping developing nations escape poverty.

China and other emerging economies may not need the bank's financing but they still can benefit from its expertise, Kim said.

The volatile situation in countries engulfed in the "Arab Spring" protests demonstrates vividly the need for growth that generates jobs, especially for the young and for women. That is all the more crucial in "fragile" states affected by conflict, where disaffected or idle young people may just pick up arms if they have no better options, Kim said.

"If you have economic growth that is not inclusive you are building instability into your system," he said.
